What is this about and what does the SDG “Climate Action” mean for the event industry?
Sustainability goal 13 calls for immediate action to combat climate change and the impact thereof. SDG 13 encompasses climate protection and goals for adapting to the consequences of climate change. For the event industry, this means that events should be organised in an environmentally friendly way and facilitate a reduction in CO2 emissions. (source tw-media.com (opens in a new tab))
How do we implement this?
Many measures that are already mentioned in other SDGs are bundled again in SDG 13 to call for the universal and prioritised combat of climate change and for contribution to all measures connected with sustainability.
✓ Calculation of the carbon footprint:
- Events of all types cause CO2 emissions and leave a carbon footprint behind – an ecological footprint. A first step in the right direction is to understand how much CO2 your own event will emit. In this way, countermeasures to reduce CO2 can be specially developed.
We provide a CO2 calculator specifically designed for events to quickly and easily calculate carbon emissions (speziell für Veranstaltungen ausgelegten CO2-Rechner vom Umweltbundesamt (opens in a new tab) - german version). The emissions for your event can thus be clearly calculated free of charge. The calculator is regularly updated by the German Environment Agency or the contractor, KlimAktiv GmbH, with regard to the latest scientific knowledge.
✓ CO2 reduction through mobility:
Mobility is one of the main causes of high CO2 emissions at events. We support event organisers in getting guests and employees to and from Wiesbaden in an environmentally friendly way and in encouraging them to use public transport or bicycles.
- As the state capital of Hessen, Wiesbaden is centrally located in Germany and is easily accessible by public transport from all directions in a few hours. Wiesbaden is thus a suitable event location where participants from all over Germany can take part.
- The event infrastructure in Wiesbaden contributes per se to SDG 13. Wiesbaden is a relatively small city. The major event venues such as the RMCC, Kurhaus Wiesbaden and the main hotels are all within walking distance of one another and the Wiesbaden main train station.
- Provision of discounted tickets for public urban transport (e.g. DB-Veranstaltungsticket - german version). German rail event ticket.
- Free job ticket for employees.
✓ Reduction of CO2 emissions through:
- Use of electricity from renewable energy in the RMCC, the Kurhaus Wiesbaden, in the Jagdschloss Platte and in the WICM GmbH offices.
- Use of energy-saving LED technology at the event venues.
- A 1.200 m² photovoltaic system with 200 kWp for generating basic power is located on the roof of the RMCC. Approx. 130-140 tonnes of CO2 emissions are thus saved every year. Surplus energy that is not consumed by the RMCC is fed into the general power grid.
- Low heat consumption thanks to heat insulation and multiply glazed windows.
- Low power consumption for lighting thanks to the use of daylight. Daylight in almost all conference rooms in the RMCC; 90% of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows for maximum daylight.
- Peak loads in the RMCC are covered by district heating from a biomass thermal power plant.
- The RMCC has a wastewater heat pump. The heat produced in this way is fed into the heating cycle and used for the underfloor heating, for example.
- Energy-optimised air-conditioning and heating technology.
- Continuous monitoring of consumption and technically optimal control of heat and cooling.
- Consistently switching off unused devices/lighting.
✓ Waste reduction:
- At major public events that are operated by WICM GmbH, stand holders, wine stands, gastronomy stands etc. are not allowed to use disposable tableware and are required to use reusable alternatives. This is integrated in the invitation to tender for events and the market regulations and is checked on a random basis during the events.
- Collection of recyclables in the company (batteries, fluorescent tubes, spectacles, natural corks, bottle caps, mobile phones + accessories, pens, CDs/DVDs).
✓ Prioritising water efficiency:
- The RMCC has a service water system with an external cistern and a capacity of 145 m³ of water. Rainwater is collected in the cistern, which is captured on the roof of the south area and drained into the cistern through a filter. The rainwater is used for the toilet flushing, watering the grass squares in front of the house as well as for the water level in the three pools in front of the building.
- The RMCC and Kurhaus Wiesbaden are fitted with toilets with water-saving function and automatic taps at the sinks.
- Environmentally friendly sanitation technologies through the installation of towel dispensers in all sanitary areas of the RMCC and Kurhaus Wiesbaden as well as the offices to avoid paper towel waste.
✓ Involving regional products:
- We sell almost exclusively local and regional produce in our Tourist Information (opens in a new tab). We organise monthly events in the Wiesbaden Tourist Information, to which local businesses are invited where they can present and sell their products. („Wiesbaden Trifft sich (opens in a new tab)“)
- With the “Greenline”, our catering partner in the RMCC „GAUL CATERING (opens in a new tab)“ pursues a sustainable catering concept that integrates seasonal products, regional partners and vegetarian dishes, which are freshly prepared at front cooking stations before the guests. Gaul has developed sustainability guidelines for the company itself, their suppliers and partners. These include guidelines for procuring food, for selecting suppliers, for reducing waste and disposable products, for water consumption, waste separation and many more sustainable topics.
