SDG "Responsible Consumption and Production"

The Wiesbaden answer in Hessisch: “Wenischer is Mehr”

What is this about and what does the SDG "Responsible Consumption and Production" mean for the event industry?

SDG 12 stands for the responsible use of resources with regard to (individual) consumption and production. This includes avoiding waste, efficient recycling and the safe discharge of hazardous substances as well as the use of recyclable materials, services and products.

The event industry can make a major contribution to promoting a sustainable future through the implementation of sustainable practices. (tw-media.com (opens in a new tab))

How do we implement this?

✓ Involving regional products:

  • We sell almost exclusively local and regional produce in our Tourist Information. We organise monthly events in the Wiesbaden Tourist Information, to which local businesses are invited where they can present and sell their products.
  • With the “Greenline”, our catering partner in the RMCC, “GAUL CATERING”, pursues a sustainable catering concept that integrates seasonal products, regional partners and vegetarian dishes, which are prepared at front cooking stations before the guests. Gaul has developed sustainability guidelines for the company itself, their suppliers and partners. These include guidelines for procuring food, for selecting suppliers, for reducing waste and disposable products, for water consumption, waste separation and many more sustainable topics.

✓ Reducing print products:

  • Reducing information using fewer print products
  • Lower circulation for all print products
  • Print on sustainable paper with FSC® certification
  • Conversion of print products to digital products (e.g. Convention Wiesbaden Quarterly (opens in a new tab))
  • Reduction in the number of layout plans at all WICM GmbH outdoor events (e.g. Rheingau Wine Festival, Twinkling Star Christmas Market)
  • Digital guided tours in TEAMS or on end devices. No paper hall plans or hall capacities

✓ Using sustainable products in day-to-day business:

  • Use of sustainable paper products
  • Use of toilet paper made partly from recycling material
  • Procurement and use of sustainable work clothing (material, quality)
  • Environmentally friendly sanitation technologies through the installation of towel dispensers in al sanitary areas of the RMCC and the Kurhaus to avoid paper towel waste
  • Trade fair material or banners etc. are procured with recyclability in mind so that purchases can be used multiply in different situations (e.g. use of the RMCC feelgood oasis since 2018 at events and trade fairs and on loan to customers)
  • Organic coffee, organic milk, regional water in glass bottles for employees

✓ Waste reduction:

  • At major public events that are operated by WICM GmbH, stand holders, wine stands, gastronomy stands etc. are not allowed to use disposable tableware and are required to use reusable alternatives. This is integrated in the invitation to tender for events and the market regulations and is checked on a random basis during the events.
  • Collection of recyclables in the company (batteries, fluorescent tubes, spectacles, natural corks, bottle caps, mobile phones + accessories, pens, CDs/DVDs)

✓ Cooperation in sustainable networks:

✓ Sustainable procurement guidelines in invitations to tender:

  • Consideration of social criteria in the terms of participation for contract-awarding procedures (e.g. §21 Act on Mandatory Working Conditions for Workers Posted Across Borders and for Workers Regularly Employed in Germany (Arbeitnehmer-Entsendegesetz), §98c Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz), §19 Act Regulating a General Minimum Wage (Mindestlohngesetz), §21 Act to Combat Undeclared Work and Unlawful Employment  (Schwarzarbeitsbekämpfungsgesetz), §22 Act on Corporate Due Diligence Obligations in Supply Chains (Lieferkettensorgfaltspflichtgesetz) regarding violations of applicable environmental, social or labour law obligations, commitment to collective labour agreements and minimum pay in accordance with the Hessisches Vergabe- und Tariftreuegesetz (HVTG) (Hessian act on tendering and pay agreements), declaration that there is no “connection with Russia“)
  • Proof of occupational safety and health protection
  • Consideration of sustainability in the criteria for awarding contracts (e.g. production of the poinsettia for the Christmas tree in the Kurhaus foyer, transport distance for deliveries)

✓ Promoting sustainable mobility:

  • We support event organisers in getting guests and employees to and from Wiesbaden in an environmentally friendly way and in encouraging them to use public transport or bicycles
  • The location of the RMCC, which is within walking distance of Wiesbaden main train station, is specially emphasised during sales pitches
  • Provision of discounted tickets for public urban transport (e.g. DB-Veranstaltungsticket) German rail event ticket
  • Central location in Wiesbaden: event infrastructure including hotels, venues, gastronomy, city centre and main train station are within walking distance
  • Free job ticket for employees
