The environment & economy in Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden with its numerous companies has set itself the goal of converting to a climate-friendly and sustainable way of doing business.

Ökoprofit

With the business advisory and networking programme, ÖkoProfit, the state capital of Wiesbaden is supporting companies and institutions of all sizes and from all sectors in introducing environmental management and in organising their processes in a more climate-friendly and sustainable way.

Wiesbaden was the first Hessian local authority to start the EcoProfit advisory programme in 2000. Since then, a total of 127 companies and institutions have taken part in ÖkoProfit.

The 37 ÖkoProfit businesses in the 14th EcoProfit session 2020/2021 save approx. the below per annum for example:

  • 3 million kilowatt hours of electricity
  • 1 million kilowatt hours of thermal and process energy
  • 2,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions
  • 23,000 litres of fuel
  • 3.8 million sheets of paper
  • 74,000 kilogrammes of raw material
  • 285,000 kilogrammes of waste
  • 500,000 litres of water
  • 1 million euros in total

After successful participation in the environmental advisory programme “ÖkoProfit Wiesbaden” in 2021, the ecological optimisation of the operations in our event locations - the RMCC, the Kurhaus and the Jagdschloss Platte – was recertified.

Ökoprofit-Club

In the Hessian state capital, experts are working in different committees on the implementation of the urban climate-protection targets. The ÖkoProfit Club networks companies that want to continuously improve their environmental and climate balance as well as their sustainability performance and that are trying to achieve recertification as an ÖkoProfit operation. In addition to the dialogue, the club helps anchor the concept of environmental and climate protection inside companies in the long term.

In five to six workshops on specific topics and two advisory meetings on site, the companies receive detailed information on topics related to sustainable corporate management. They develop their environmental programmes further and are prepared for recertification.

The importance of energy efficiency is thus reinforced and the Wiesbaden economy is actively involved in the environmental and climate-protection of the city, which was awarded the „Fair-Trade-Stadt“ (opens in a new tab) certificate in 2012.

Commitment to increased sustainability is recognised in Wiesbaden: the city has been awarding the „Wiesbadener Umweltpreis“ (opens in a new tab), every two years since 2010, which honours special dedication to sustainability.

The youth is also involved in the process for more sustainability. The network „Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ (opens in a new tab) (BNE) (“Education for Sustainable Development“) raises cross-generational awareness for sustainable development and there is a regularly held sustainability dialogue in which experts exchange experiences and ideas with the population.
